We went on a school trip to Kyoto.
(京都へ修学旅行に行きました。)

outing ならば、

The school kids went on an outing to the planetarium.
(小学生たちは遠足でプラネタリウムへ行きました。)

語源辞典によると、この意味で使われ始めたのは1821年だそうです。
