日本語では普通に使うのだけれど、英語では何て言えばいいの？ちょっと悩んでしまう日本語表現を英訳してみましょう。

今日は、「案外〜だった」です。

母: テストはどうだった？

子: 案外、簡単だった。

これを英訳してみましょう。「案外」は、「期待したよりも」と解釈できます。ですから、比較級を使います。

Mother: How was the test?

Son: It was easier than expected.

「案外〜だ」は 比較級 + than expected です。

練習しましょう。

映画は案外面白かった。

The movie was more interesting than expected.

今日は案外暖かいなあ。

It’s warmer than expected today.

意外に苦労した。

I had more trouble than expected.

彼女は、意外に料理上手だ。

She is a better cook than expected.

意外にたくさんの人が来てくれた。

More people came than expected.

A: 募金たくさん集まった？

Did you raise a lot of money for donation?

B: うん。案外ね。

Yeah. More than expected.
